Make room for Dada!

EPostcard_DADA040510

We’re just two days away from Dada Ball 2010: Dada Rocks with Decades! Full-access tickets have sold out and the wait list is growing. But we do have tickets for the infamous After Party! Come mix and mingle with the celebs and VIPs on our star-studded guest list: Chloë Sevigny, Golden-Globe winning actress; Karlie Kloss, St. Louisan and Vogue supermodel; Cameron Silver, fashion master and owner of Decades LA; and Derek Blasberg, fashion writer and author of the just-released, best-selling book Classy. (Don’t miss his Dada booksigning at Left Bank Books Downtown, Sat., 4/17, 2:00 pm.)

Friday night, Cameron and Derek lead a fashion-oriented panel discussion in Wash U’s Steinberg Hall, another Dada don’t-miss. And did you catch Cameron this morning on KMOV. He spoke eloquently about vintage fashion: how to wear it, where to find it. If you missed it, check him out here

But you want to know about the After Party, right? A $35 ticket (sold online, by phone (314-535-0770 x204) or at the door the night of the party), includes: complimentary valet parking, an open bar, savories and sweets from Mosaic and Ruth’s Chris, and the chance to win Best Dressed in a contest produced by St. Louis Magazine. Two winners will take home a $500 gift card from Saks, a $100 gift card from Ruth’s Chris, plenty of swag, and the all-important bragging rights.

So put on some glam! Come be a diva on the Contemporary’s dance floor! Make the Dada Ball After Party your late-night destination on Saturday. Doors open at 10 pm. See you there!

Art Museum Gifts…come in all forms

Thanksgiving has passed, so now it is time to really get series about holiday gift giving! Most people don’t think about turning to art museums for wonderful gift ideas, so here is your chance to get in on the secret. MUSE gift shop, at the Contemporary, has many items on sale around the holidays. There is always something fun and unique on the shelves in MUSE. You can also give the gift of museum membership. This is truly a unique gift because recipients will receive membership benefits for an entire year AND the money you spend to purchase the gift goes towards supporting a cultural institution!

Muse

Another important gift you could make this holiday season is to New Art in the Neighborhood (NAN) students. This year, the Contemporary is focusing on raising funds for this important educational program. NAN is a pre-professional, scholarship-based program for high school students wishing to gain exposure and experience in the arts. The students spend each Saturday afternoon for a semester at the Contemporary creating and learning about art from museum staff, artists, and each other. One of the things that these students lack in their classroom is technology. In order to create and store artwork and portfolios, students need access to computers, printers, cameras, and more. You can make a difference in the lives of these teens by making a gift! Click here for more information and here to donate now.

The 5th Anniversary Gala

It was amazing to see the hundreds of people gathered to raise funds for the museum, to honor two incredible Saint Louis artists, and to celebrate the first five years of this institution. During the program, I was standing in the back of the room just in awe of the energy and excitement. There were three compelling videos presented (one about each honored artist, and one about our educational program, New Art in the Neighborhood). Each was shown on all four giant screens in the Four Seasons ballroom, and were moving enough to make me (who works at the museum and knew exactly what was to happen next) choke up a bit. I watched people get so excited they had to stand up and clap, then catch themselves, and hurry up to sit back down. I experienced the excitement throughout the crowd during the auction…listening to the bids going  higher and higher. I also watched one of our volunteers smile, glowing and proud, during the entire video about New Art in the Neighborhood-her daughter is part of the program, and volunteering is her way to give back to us for the a program that she and her daughter value so much. Once the emotions of the videos, the auction, the raise the paddle and the awards subsided, everyone was invited to relax and enjoy each other’s company at the after-party. And that they did.

View a little glimpse of the after-party and read all about the gala here and here.

A Past Exhibition

Remember the Maya Lin:  Systematic Landscapes exhibition? Of course you do! It was a much loved show here at the Contemporary and received much attention. Just recently a student did a video project using installation images and clips of an interview with Maya Lin. Systematic Landscapes is also inspiration to students in the Contemporary ArtReach program. The students in this program are from Metro Academic Classical High School (Metro) and are in their second year of a two year collaboration project, initially funded by Monsanto, of building a sculpture for permanent installation at their school.

Dada Stats

The Dada Ball (the Contemporary’s biennial fundraiser) was almost a month ago. Can you believe it? I have some facts/updates about the evening I would like to share. We sold more than 370 seats for the dinner and auction (which constitutes for a sold out event!) and the After-Party gave way to the best attendance thus far. In all, we had more than 700 guests grace us with there presence that evening, helping us to meet our fundraising goal of $200,000. It was a great night and all of the support we received makes it that much easier for us to continue to serve the community!

Dada comes down…back to reality!

Dada Ball & After-Party

Every two years the Contemporary hosts a HUGE dinner, auction, and wild party: the Dada Ball. All the proceeds raised from the event benefit the Contemporary’s education programs and exhibitions – so it is a pretty big deal for us -as well as a big deal to community members who come to have one WILD night while supporting the Contemporary. They get to step out of reality for an evening and enter into the surreal world of DADA! What is DADA exactly? Check out this link to Reference.com. What do you think of when you hear Dada?

so much programming, so many events

There are so many events and programs going on in February, and a big bulk of them will happen with in this week. I think some of the staff members are going crazy, but it is all for good reason! Today is the second Walk-In Wednesday. Guests will meet one of the Great Rivers Biennial artists, Michelle Oosterbann…and yes there is another potluck lunch today. Then tonight we have two events, Flight – basically a giant party and the Dada Preview Party. Guests will get to see what people wore to past Dada Balls, view auction items, and have a chance to buy tickets. (The Dada Ball and After-Party is a dinner, auction, then wild party where people dress up in crazy costume, eat & drink a lot, and where there is tons of crazy, incredible décor). Then tomorrow on Valentines Day is Slap Happy (Hour) (when I told my grandma about the event she said “tell them to change the name to Slappy Hour,”…I thought that was a pretty good one…she’s funny).  On Sunday there is a Public Forum…these two events go along with the White Flag Projects (the Front Room occupant) – I mentioned these events in a previous blog.

Saturday is Maritz Free Family Day, which sounds like an awesome event for kids and families. Kids will get to engage in lots of arts activities like design a logo, participate in sing-a-longs, and watch short animated kid videos. From photos I have seen in years past, this event is a big hit.

Next week we have another Walk-In Wednesday, Open Laptop (being described as an ‘open mic’ for visual artists), an artist fitness competition, and a printsale and reception (lots of prints for under $50) -And there are lots more the following week. Crazy, huh? There is more info about all this on our web…or you can ask for more info here. -mrq of camstl

A Weird Carnival

Cole, our Events Coordinator, just pointed out that Arts Desire, the Contemporary’s biennial gala, left quite an impression on the street. A mixture of Tiffany boxes, Campbell soup cans, and Bud Select bottles lined the street, underneath the great impression of a huge white tent – stretching from one side of Spring Ave to the other. All were saved and recycled. . . The Tiffany boxes may be used at an upcoming Family Day (focusing on recycling and environmental issues), the Campbell soup cans went to a local charity providing food to those affected by AIDS and cancer, and the Bud Select bottles were picked up by a local company who recycles aluminum cans. We imagine that people walking by afterward thought that a strange carnival had been celebrated over the weekend, leaving only traces of stories to be told. And, we do have a story to tell! We raised more revenue for our exhibitions and education program than any event in our fundraising history! That’s quite an accomplishment. Final totals are still be tallied, but let’s say it’s good and I’ll share our numbers later. In the meanwhile, Katie Holten, whose first solo museum exhibition will open this Friday at the Contemporary, is busily working on the Missouri Oak she is constructing in the gallery out of museum recycled materials (as mentioned before, we seem to have plenty). Please plan to join us in celebrating Katie Holten’s opening as well as the opening of Shoot the Family, a traveling exhibition of contemporary photography – this Friday.

On Campbells and Art

A follow-up on Campbell’s Soup. We’ve had to empty more than 50 cans of soup (rumor has it that the total has approached 100 cans). And of course, we couldn’t let it go to waste, so several staff members found excellent recipes that have been used this week to provide staff lunches as we prepare for the BIG event: Arts Desire (tomorrow). Erinn made Tomato Bisque. It was delicious. I really can’t distract her from auction duties, so I can’t share that recipe, but I can share an excellent recipe for gazpacho that Katherine put to the test this week:

Blender Gazpacho

The blender gazpacho makes instant work of this cold Spanish soup. Since gazpacho improves with age, make it ahead of time whenever possible. Although the olive oil is optional in this recipe, it adds real dimension to the flavor and texture of the soup. Even if you leave it out of the gazpacho, drizzle a tad on top at serving time.

6 servings

2 pounds of rip tomatoes – peeled, seeded and coarsely chopped, or one 28 ounce can best-quality plum tomatoes, chopped; 1 medium onion, preferably a sweet variety such as Vidalia or Walla Walla, coarsely chopped; 1 large cucumber, peeled; 1/2 green bell pepper, coarsely chopped; 1/2 red bell pepper, coarsely chopped; 2 scallions, coarsely chopped; 3 garlic cloves; 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil; 3 T. sherry vinegar or balsamic vinegar; 1-2 t. hot pepper sauce, 1 t. ground cumin; 1/2 to 1 c. chilled tomato juice (Contemporary’s substitution of 1 can of Campbell’s Tomato Soup and water); salt and freshly ground black pepper; croutons, chopped fresh herbs, sliced scallions or diced avocado, for garnish.

1. In a large bowl, stir together the tomatoes, onion, cucumber, bell peppers, scallions, and garlic. Working in 2 cup batches, whirl the mixture in a blender until finely chopped but not pureed. Return the mixture to the bowl and stir in the oil, vinegar, hot pepper sauce, and cumin. Add enough of the cold tomato juice (or soup!) to make the gazpacho soupy (see it works perfectly – mission accomplished), but not too thin. Season generously with salt and black pepper.

2. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the soup until very cold, at least a couple of hours or for up to 2 days. Stir the gazpacho and ladle it into bowl, or pour it at a table from a wide-mouth pitcher. Garnish with croutons, herbs, scallions or diced avocado.

And our final preview of work for the auction:

Arts Desire Auction Art

Lucky DeBellevue
Study for Outdoor Sculpture, 2007
Wood and chenille stems
14 x 12 x 8 inches
Courtesy of the artist
Value: $4000

New York-based artist Lucky DeBellevue earned her BFA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and her MFA from the University of New Orleans. Although originally a painter, DeBellevue had this to say about media: “I liked finding something to do with whatever was at home, and in my case, it was pipe cleaners, copper wire, and garbage bag twisties.” From these ordinary objects, DeBellevue builds intricate sculptures which reveal her interest in the repetition and ritual of busywork. Recent solo exhibitions including Feature Inc., New York; Ingalls and Associates, Miami; the Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; and the Roger Björkholmen Galleri in Stockholm, Sweden.

For info on more work in the auction, visit the website.
