About The Blog

The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis have joined together to create the Contemporary-Pulitzer blog which, for the first time, combines the perspectives of two separate institutions with differing missions within the same blog.

Offering alternating posts each day from the Pulitzer and Contemporary, the blog provides a candid look at the behind-the-scenes workings of both arts organizations.

Yawn Happy Hour

Tomorrow evening the Contemporary will host Yawn Happy Hour, an opportunity to “unwind after work with an evening of art, music, and drinks at the Contemporary.” Events like these are always great because they allow community members to do something different. They can get drinks, listen to avant-garde music (performed by Yawn), browse through the museum and be social in a different, fun, art setting. Here is an article about Yawn Happy Hour in the River Front Times. You can also take a look at Yawn’s website.

Museum Music

Newest Contemporary staff member, Shannon, fills us in on some of her favorite tunes. You can hear all of these songs on our MySpace page.

“I have the strangest taste in music; I’m not really sure how I can simultaneously be a Barry Manilow and Smashing Pumpkins fan, but I am.  My iPod is filled with every kind of music: classical, jazz, grunge, pop, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, so there is always something to listen to, no matter what kind of mood I’m in.  This is by no means my “top 10 favorite songs,” but I wouldn’t mind being stuck somewhere for a while with only these tunes to listen to.”

1.  David Bowie – Life on Mars

2.  The Rolling Stones – Ruby Tuesday

3.  The Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise

4.  Bettie Serveert – Unsound

5.  Prince – When Doves Cry

6.  Michael Jackson – Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’

7.  Cake – Never There

8.  Queen & David Bowie – Under Pressure

9.  The Cure – Lovesong

10.  Weezer – The World Has Turned and Left Me Here

Contemporary Top Music Choices!

Exhibitions and Operations Manager Shane Simmons gives you some of his top music choices. Check out our MySpace page to hear his picks!

I spend a good part of each day on the highway so most of what I’m listening to these days is whatever is good to drive to or what my two year old son and I can agree on.  He insists on hearing guitars and is as impatient as I am with the radio (what would we do without KDHX?), so it is generally a frantic search to find something suitable and every once in a while you stumble across Sabbath’s “Sweet Leaf” or that Kylie Minogue song, but mostly it’s a consistent shuffling of discs while navigating narrow lanes.  Good or bad, here is a list of a few items making the current rotation this week:

  • 1. M.I.A, “Paper Planes”
  • 2. Queens Of The Stone Age, “You Got A Killer Scene There, Man…”
  • 3. Feist, “My Moon My Man”
  • 4. Bob Dylan, “Ain’t Talkin’”
  • 5. Tom Waits, “Lucinda”
  • 6. The Doors, “The Changeling”
  • 7. Danzig, “Until You Call On The Dark”

Electronic Rocker

So if you are caught up on your Contemporary blog reading you are probably aware that we hosted a performance by electronic rocker Silverio this past Thursday. All I am going to say is WOW and let the pictures and videos speak for themselves. If you want to see Silverio’s performance, visit the Contemporary’s YouTube page. Click on our favorites and find four video clips of his performance here.

Silverio!

Silverio, an electronic rocker and a phenomenon in Mexico City and abroad, is coming to the Contemporary to rock his party music sound and deliver an outrageous live performance. According to his record label’s website, “This electronic party music sounds like it came from the Stone Age with kick ass live shows that are a total blast when compared with the insipid and boring shows of the so called cool electronic music scene.”

In collaboration with Boots Contemporary Art Space, we’re presenting Silverio on Thursday, April, 3. Silverio is represented by artist-run record label Nuevos Ricos which was founded in 2004 by visual artist Carols Amorales, composer Julian Lede, and graphic designer André Pahl. The label has an innovate approach that works as a platform to expose their radical ideas about performance, music, and show business.

The night of the performance will also offer music by MADBLAZIAN and drinks by Rolling Rock.

Tickets are available here.

It should be a wild time…check out the below poster advertising the event and our You Tube page to view a Silverio video clip and you’ll see what I mean. -mrq of camstl
