March 24th, 2009As Amy wrote a few weeks back, we are in the midst of a new program called Staging Old Masters: Former Prisoners Perform at the Pulitzer. Former prisoners, all of whom are graduates of Employment Connection, will be working with Agnes Wilcox of Prison Performing Arts to write and perform theatrical pieces inspired by their interactions with works of art in the Old Masters exhibition. At the same time, they’ll be attending specialized classes through Employment Connection to assist them in bridging their work in class to the development of employment and life skills. They’re also working with Washington University students from the Performing Arts Department, the Department of English, and the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, and faculty from the Performing Arts Department to foster a mutually-beneficial learning environment, an open atmosphere, and a supportive, team-building experience.
As you can tell, it’s a big program. Which is why we’ve launched a mini-site to document the whole thing – from theatrical exercises and writing sessions to the final performances. We’ll post interviews, video, behind-the-scenes stories, details on the curriculum and the research behind it. There’s also the schedule of performances so you can check out the final result in person. Check it all out (and keep checking back!) here.
